Hi All - new to the forum. Drove first gen troopers all thru college in the late 90's. no almost 30 years later I just took delivery of one 88 and 89 2.6! I'm restoring one, and going to give my kids the other one to wrench on.
Got the 88 running like a top last night. It had been sitting for a long while. Timed it and got it purring like a kitten. Then I was degreasing it and hosing it down (while running, I know I know.....) and something shorted out. Melted both positive and negative battery cables. Got them cleaned up a bit and tried hooking them up again but it's sparking the battery like crazy and showing a big short on the positive side.
Couple questions, 1 - what's the obvious things you'd recommend checking, 2 - how can I source the proper replacement battery cables, or can I just use proper length universal?

UPATE - the connection at starter was loose and grounded to block. Used universal style cables. Easy fix.
