2001 Isuzu Trooper Transmission Swap

Postby Jeffzuzu » Tue Jun 08, 2021 3:18 pm

Will the transmission out of a 2002 trooper fit my 2001 trooper and if so will it be plug and play ready or will it need flashing/programming?
Thank you guys in advance

* ok I just found this out; my transmission is a YB and the one I was replacing it with is a YA.

The 4L30e transmission in a 2002 Trooper is identical to the one in a 2001 Trooper.
The correct ID tag # is 96018507

So Buster if the one that failed is a YB it can be replaced with a YA
I can’t see the I’d tag on my transmission being it’s still in the vehicle
I can see it’s a YB though

The only model code YB 4L30e transmission I have a reference for is this 96018555 transmission. Part# 96018555 Is a 00-02 Rodeo transmission and not suitable for a 00-02 Trooper because the Trooper 4L30e uses a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) controlled Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) and the Rodeo uses an On/Off type TCC.

How do you know it is a model YB if you can't see the tag?

The YB and where your picture shows GM mine says G instead of GM
So the top of the tag is all I can see
The YB and the G

It is likely the wrong transmission is installed in your truck.

I just bought this transmission for $550
The vehicle had been wrecked at 72000 miles
What do you think Buster

ID tag # 96018507 is the correct 4L30e transmission for a 00-02 USA import Trooper. It has a 4WD tail shaft and extension housing. When used in a 2WD 00-02 Trooper, there is a special short propeller shaft extension attached to the transmission that takes the place of the 4WD transfer case.

The 96018507 transmission uses a PWM TCC control system, a special Torque Converter is used with this transmission. Make sure you attach the correct Torque Converter when you install the transmission. The "PWM Torque Converter" has a more robust woven carbon clutch friction material because the clutch is designed to slip.
This link describes the PWM TCC

I don't have a link to a removal tutorial, but you will need 17mm zero offset wrench to remove the 6 torque converter to flex plate bolts.
Genius Tools 781417L is a suitable wrench.

I've tried to email a copy of the repair manual for your Trooper to other members before, but I'm not tech savvy enough to compress it enough to be received. If someone could help me with that, I'd be glad to share the info.

Good evening guys
I removed the transmission
So I gave a question for Buster or anyone else
Ok so we agree it is the wrong transmission
So I got to thinking, what about the transfer case…
Are the transfer cases the same? I took a picture of the sticker I found on this case
I didn’t get a transfer case with the transmission I purchased, the actual transmission that’s supposed to be in the vehicle
I’m going to try and post the pic

The ISZ TAG is typically found on a Torque On Demand (TOD) 4WD transfer case, so it is probably original to the truck.

Btw, make sure the two transmission bell housing alignment pins are installed when you bolt the new transmission to the engine and make sure you have the correct torque converter installed.

This is the torque converter that was with the incorrect transmission

Mine looked like the rusty one when I pulled my transmission. I mean it was painted blue and not covered in rust but it was this style.

I think the CVC is for CONSOLIDATED VEHICLE CONVERTERS:
https://www.cvcconverters.com/
The correct CVC converter for the 00-02 Trooper 4L30e appears to be a BU40W

Thank you Buster

So will it be stamped on the back of the converter?
If the rusted one is the correct one will the rust impact performance?

Remove the Torque Converter from the flex plate and look for identifying numbers.
Btw, you can't install the transmission with Torque Converter bolted to the flex plate so it has to come off either way. The rusty one may be usable, if you wire brush the rust off.

Is there a bushing or a bearing in the Crankshaft end where the Torque Converter shell is supported?
Is there any indication the Crankshaft seal is leaking?
Were the alignment pins installed?

Thank you Buster
I will check these later
So the BU40W should be visible on the back side of TC?

Another question, the photo above showing the yellow plug; does anything plug into it because I didn’t unplug it or see anything that plugs into it
The plug is on top of the engine. The picture loaded sideways
**** ok I did find the plug that matches the one in the photo. I overlooked it

You will not get these 6 bolts out with a 0 offset wrench.
I’m having to design a wrench to get these out with unless there is this big trick I don’t know about
