Rodeo 2001 engine rpm low on start

Postby Goauld » Wed Nov 18, 2020 3:17 pm

Hello, I have a problem with my V6 Rodeo (6VD1).
A few years ago I rebuilded engine and cleaned throttle valve (electronically controlled). Before that, everything was fine. After this procedure the engine has low rpm after start, or the engine shuts off, when outside temperature is about 10-20°C (50-68°F). When the engine does not stop, the rpm rises to normal after few seconds (about 10s). When the engine is hot, there is no problem. When I disconnect the temperature sensor, no problem too. When is cold weather 0°C (32°F) or lower, also no problem.
Sometimes the check engine light on, usually not.
I replaced the temperature sensor, but no effect.
It annoys me already.
Where there may be a problem ?
Thanks for your response.

When you rebuilt the engine did you use the OEM plastic lower intake manifold gaskets or the preferred Fel-Pro gaskets?

I used some non-original set of seals on the whole engine. From this seller https://www.ebay.com/itm/Head-Gasket-Se ... %3A2334524
But I think, there is no problem. After about 10s is everything go normal.

To me it sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Too much air for the startup fuel calculation is causing the engine to stall. Once the engine warms up the leak seals and the air/fuel ratio is correct. If the CEL is showing a P0300 code it is most likely a misfire caused by the incorrect air/fuel ratio due to the vacuum leak. If problem did not exist before you rebuilt the engine, you probably installed the problem.
The Fel-Pro MS90610 gasket set goes for about $40 USD, hard to believe you bought a complete engine gasket set for the same price and that it is quality stuff.

When I read the codes now, this shows. And after delete codes I try start and it is absolutely normal as if nothing. Outside temperature is 6°C and rainy weather.
These codes appear occasionally and not always in this order.

Those failure codes indicate an electrical problem in the electronic throttle control system. The same system that is controlling the idle.

So how to solve it ? Do you think this may be the result of a cleanup ? Because as I said before it was alright.

Make sure the throttle valve is not sticking, check the gear train in the throttle body make sure it has grease on the gears and no burrs to cause binding.

Thank you, I'll try it. I don't know when I'll do it. Then I'll let you know how did it end up.

By the way I found the FEL-PRO HS9254PT complete set on rock auto and price is $64.79. Not so much a difference from what I bought... of course it is more expensive and certainly of better quality.
When I was buying parts, I didn't know about rockauto.com.
