Postby akermanmc » Mon Apr 09, 2012 1:19 am

is anyone else getting redirected to a cialis/viagra page when trying to enter some of the forum pages, i.e. the classifieds?

It's most likely a problem on your own computer.

Hey ! Now I'm getting redirected to a webpage for some french horseradish sauce.

Wup ! Ok, now it's the C.I.A bluebook headquarters.

And NOW, I am getting redirected to the south pole. Hey, did you know there's a guy named Esualc Atnas who lives at the south pole and goes around once a year, in july, stealing toys from kids ?

Learn something new every day, I guess.

I don't doubt you for a second !

I didn't consider you might think I was making fun of you. I'm sorry it came across that way. I was having fun with the situation, that's all.

Just out for a chuckle.

If you are being redirected, it could be the result of some sort of malware. Maybe a 'toolbar' that you have loaded ?

Or maybe a DNS redirect ?

Do some googling. You'll probably find others with the same problem, and someone might already have the solution.

Does adblock plus, and noscript work in your browser ?

I know they stop a lot of annoyances, on my machine.

No issues here. You might try googling your experience for a remedy other than those you have tried. Or perhaps due to being a fairly new member with not much history, you could try deleting your account and rejoining under another name.

I'm also getting redirected to a viagra ad page called "Canadian Pharmacy" when clicking links on the forum. It's intermittent- it only occurs sometimes, and if I click back in the browser and try the link again usually it will work properly the next time.

I really doubt it's my computer, since this happens regularly on this site, and has never happened on any other site. I'm running Opera 11 on OSX. The fact that another user here is reporting the same problem makes me suspect the server is hacked.

A clarification: This redirect only happens when clicking the link "General Isuzu Topics" at the top of the page, when already in a subforum and happens everytime I click this. I was apparently wrong about it being intermittent, or occurring on other links.

The server has *definitely* been hacked. I reproduced it on several different computers, running different operating systems and different browsers.

The clearest reproduction is this: running wget as follows on a debian linux box returned the following text:

Delete all cookies that have to do with this forum.

Close your browser. Then open it again. Then check to make sure the forum cookies are still gone.

Once you are sure the forum cookies are gone for good, then come back here and log in again, and try your 'experiment' again.

Let me know if that helps.

Did you see my last post? I was able to grab the viagra ads directly from the server from a linux command line on a computer that has no web browser or cookies at all, and had never connected to this site before. This has nothing to do with browsers or cookies on my end.

It couldn't possibly have anything to do with my computers- the server itself has been compromised. However, the exploit publishing the ads appears to be adept at avoiding detection by randomly (or by some other pattern) usually returning the correct content, and only occasionally presenting the ads.

I won't argue about this anymore, I provided all of the evidence I can possibly provide.

Edit: Just an idea- If I were designing an ad exploit for phpBB, it seems like the ultimate way to avoid detection would be to never show the ads to old users, and only to new ones. The old users would never believe they existed, and the exploit would remain installed long term. You might try resetting your browser and coming back to the site, perhaps even signing up with a new test username. If my hypothesis is correct, you will then see the ads appear.

the fact that another new user has had the same problem makes me think that this is definitely a server hack. there was a redirect virus going around for a while that had similar symptoms to this, but it targeted google links and none of the remedies have worked for this problem. as i said before, i have tried everything, and this definitely looks like a hack. i have read that there are hacks out there that target new users in order to camouflage the problem. something to look into anyway.

I'm sure you put the whole hostname in, but it just doesn't show up here. That said, it would have been helpful to show us the output from:
$> host forum.planetisuzoo.com

This would have tipped us off if your DNS server had been compromised. If it was, it may have been fixed by now.

Yes, I put the whole hostname in, but it was shortened to a hyperlink automatically by the forum software.

JoeIsuzu wrote:if your DNS server had been compromised

I was able to get the ads from two separate locations with different computers: at my house on a cable modem with an apple laptop, and on campus at a public university from a linux server. There's nothing in common between the two machines that I can think of which could cause this, besides planetisuzoo.com itself having been compromised.

The probability seems very low that both DNS servers were compromised in the same way, and both only attacked specific pages on planetisuzoo.com (no other websites), while mostly allowing it to work properly.

In any case, everything seems to be working normal now, so I can't do any further diagnosis. Perhaps whatever happened has been fixed?
