Weird burning/burnt smell.

Postby TPGoat » Thu Jul 13, 2017 8:23 pm

I have this periodic smell in the Trooper. Fills the cabin sometimes when running. Sometimes not. Sometimes when it's just sitting and it's hot outside it will make the smell.
It's not an exhaust smell. It's not a burning oil smell. It's hard to describe. Kinda like a burning grease smell. A pretty pungent hydrocarbon smell that's not like anything I am familiar with.

I notice that when it's hot out, the smell seems to come from the passenger footwell area. Possibly from the hvac fan.

Ideas?

It has happened to us once. Did you find your problem?

No. It seems to have gone away now that the weather is cold.

Either the cold weather or the mouse living somewhere under the hood finally decomposed. :)

My money is on the butyl rubber they use on the sound deadener under the carpets. A little offgassingbwhen the temps creep into triple digit range.
