1986 trooper 42k original miles for sale.

Postby J_Breeze_Isuzu » Wed Mar 10, 2021 12:52 pm

Hello all,

The time has come where I must downsize all of my vehicles. Of the 3 cars I am listing for sale this one hurts the most. That being said I have decided to put my trooper up for sale. It has 42k original miles, I am the second owner. 2.3L 4 cylinder, standard transmission. I got it at 30k. Runs strong, doesn't need much. The trooper still has the original struts and they are about shot, other than that she is pretty much good to go. There is a very small leak in the interior of the vehicle which I have determined to be trans fluid weeping out of the speedometer. I have attempted to fix it, but I can not find the adapter piece where the speedometer attaches to the trans. If anybody can point me in the best direction, I would be happy to fixing it prior to sale.

Car is located 50 minutes south west of Denver, Co in Bailey. Happy to help ship or whatever is needed. Feel free to reach out. 720-819-8345

Thanks,
Jon

Jon,

One of the key points you omitted (or I overlooked), is what engine this has. I saw a pages-long topic from when you bought it, but buyers shouldn't need to read through every post in your history to find the answer, right? ;)

As to your oil leak in the cabin, JLEMOND has some good stories about that issue. One of them, his dealership had to reimburse the cost of replacing a customer's silk hosiery, because of that leak.

If you follow the speedometer cable to the transmission, the "fitting" has only one bolt on it. You have to remove the collar (sorry, can't remember if it's a nut, or a knurled collar) to pull the cable out. Then remove the single bolt holding the gear assembly, and pry it out gently. Do NOT pry around the bolt hole, they break off. Once it's out, the gear will pull right out of the housing. It has an o-ring that typically flattens out or wears out. You can replace it with a close match from your local hardware store. Just make sure the gear will spin without too much resistance. When putting it back on, be sure it's in all the way before putting in the retaining bolt -- or (guess what) you'll break off the part with the bolt-hole.

My 88 had the same problem with the oil dripping down by the accelerator.

I am going to assume that since he described it as a 2.3L it's a diesel. Did I miss the pictures of the motor and the price? Did it sell? Are you asking $6k+?

2 door LWB are hard to find, with 42K on the clock - impossible. 6K is a good price. If the seller put it on BAT, I’d think he’d do substantially better on a sale.

If you don't drive it or don't drive it much. For comparison: Someone posted a couple of days ago how he had paid 4K for a 96 2WD Rodeo with something like 50K miles. There is currently a 94 Rodeo on my local C/L with about 74K miles and asking around 4K The vehicles are still pushing 30 years old (with the 86 past that)
My 1976 Honda XL125 had 1700 miles when I bought it 20 years ago. I said "I can keep it in my garage and say to everyone - look at my bike with only 1700 miles - or I can enjoy it. It now has around 7500 miles (I have a second one that still has only 2600 miles, but it was stored outside for a while) Dennis

Just checked and it is no longer listed. Must have sold. I rarely see a first gen Rodeo (pre 1998) any more. Usually, they are beat and 200K miles, and price between 1,000 and 1500.
I guess from now on, I need to copy and post them here. Dennis

I need a new one of those gears at the end of the speedo cable for my 1986 LWB, do you know where to get one?

It's really best to start your own "new topic" when you have a question or issue. Using someone else's topic is not a good idea. I don't mean to ruffle feathers, but I'm offering that as a gentle tip.

But it's here now, so I'll throw my $.02 in. Normally, I'd suggest contacting JLEMOND to see if he has one. That's still a good start, but it seems he hasn't been able to keep up with demand. So I'd suggest also posting a new topic and ask if anybody has one of these.

No ruffled feathers here. I will do that, just went searching and saw this, so I didn't want to miss the obvious knowledge. Emailed the legend as well!

Hate to be the one to keep encouraging you here but please don’t sell that for 6k.
Put it on an auction with a 10k minimum.
Doesn’t matter eBay but you’ll do better on BaT.
You’d be surprised what the square simple trucks are going for these days.
Just saw a rodeo go for 11k the other day. A frgn 95 rodeo?!??
Better comparisons are the $10-15k first gen troopers with more miles.
Yours has next to nothing in comparison.
And I’m being realistic as I am also a Scout guy too so I know the spread.
