Drivers side completed. The insurance card holder has a set of snaps on the back that secures it to the visor. The strap is really just for the back to hold additional paper.

My fingers are shot from all that stitching. I gotta go have a good IPA to properly recover.

Some nice and original ideas on this thread. I really like that thing with the packs hung on it on the back door. Where did you get that stuff?

Thanks for the comments. I got a few things finished up today as well. I'll post pics and a run down a little later tonight.
Stusvend- the rack is an item I picked up on ebay. Search for jeep molle panel. I bought the Jeep jk model because it was wider. The packs are just detachable pouches with molle fasteners. The molle system is just a couple straps on the back with snaps, designed to make adding and removing pouches from backpacks and military/police style vests and gear. Lots of different pouch configurations available to pretty much customize your carry capabilities.
Again for the packs search molle pouches and see what I mean.

Re: My 1988 Trooper- Azul Tortuga

Postby Bizmarkie » Mon Aug 26, 2013 8:11 pm

Ok I was waiting for the correct adapter to arrive to finish the cb install and it showed up today, so I finished it. It is a Midland 75-822 handheld with the vehicle adapter. I mounted it on one of the only flat spots available.

Image
I wanted to be able to use the cb and then stow it away while in town or whenever thievery would be possible. So I devised a plan...
I used the Firestick cable with the Firering and routed the cable out of sight in the panels along the side and then under the drivers rear door and then to the console. I used a bulkhead connector to pass the antenna through the front of the console. A double male connector mates the antenna up to the cb (it has a female end to attach directly to the antenna. It uses a cig lighter power cord and I routed and wired an accessory power port into the console as well. Works great for charging the cell phone without wires hanging over the shifter.

Image

another view:

Image

The radio has a belt clip attachment that can be used when it has the battery pack attached. I wanted to hang it so I used a cheapo cell phone attachment. I ran the screws into the pivot so if I want to use the handheld/belt clip configuration I just swap out the pivot for the belt piece by removing the screws.

Image

The antenna is mounted to the tire carrier and currently is a Wilson 4ft fiberglass whip. I have a firestik on my "to order" list to replace this one with eventually.

Image

Also in the mail was a leather steering wheel cover. It stitched that bad boy right on up to the steering wheel for a sweet little upgraded look and feel.

Image

If you look close you can see the hood louvers I installed. I am not happy with the hood and the wrinkles/dents so until I get that resolved, you can only have a sneak peek through the windshield. LOL

Is there a possibility you'll be turning the entire interior into leather? I've always wanted a King Ranch style interior. However I have no desire to own a Ford.

I like the cb setup... it's got me reconsidering mine.
Are the hood louvers going to be functional?

I see you're still rocking the Sony.... or not rocking since it doesn't work. Have you looked at pawn shops for a cheap alternatives to get you some tunes until you find the perfect radio for you?

Capt'n- I havent completely decided if I'm goning to do all the interior in leather.
The louvers non-functional right now. I am debating if I want rain to drop on top of the engine or not, so right now they are for looks.
I got the Sony to come on and I can get a channel or two. I have thought some on the replacement but haven't made any final decision.

I feel like I'm repeating myself, but you do great work! I love the idea of putting a power source in the center console, did you tap into some wires on the interior or wire it back to the battery? Also, how did you route your antenna cable in the back to get it from the interior to the exterior? I ended up simply sneaking mine out the back door, although it's getting pinched so I'm looking for alternatives...

I drilled a hole into the back door under the spare tire, treated the exposed metal with rust bullet and the route the wire through a grommet and then siliconed it. The wire follows the factory loom through to the passengers compartment.

For power to the power port I ran a power wire from the battery to the console. It is wired to a 3 fuse mini block that will feed another power port I am going to add to the rear of the console for the rear passengers. I thought about putting a third one at the rear for a power port back there.

I am going to add a jerry can mount on the back of the Troop. Also since I added the 3rd brake light I had to move the CB antenna. So since I was relocating the license plate anyway. I built a mount for the antenna and the license plate.

I started my round headlight conversion.

Image

Instead of the regular ol conversion I opted to install a headlight wiring relay harness. With this harness I wired one of the headlight plugs into the harness itself and that connection activates the relay harness when the lights are turned on. The harness is wired to the battery and independently grounded. The power to the headlights no longer has to travel the Troopers wiring harness to the switch then to the headlights. Hopefully it will produce a nice current flow and brighter headlight.

Image

The grill is pretty hammered. A former owner painted the thing a school bus yellow color and what I can only guess it spray can bed liner.
It's gonna take much more work to get it ready to install. The install is complete except for the refinishing of the grille.

Nice build you've got going on here. That's some awesome work with the leather. I also dig what your doing with your wiring on your round conversion. It's going to look sweet.

Re: My 1988 Trooper- Azul Tortuga

Postby Bizmarkie » Sat Feb 15, 2014 7:43 pm

Ok I finally got around to finish the install of the round headlight grille. I cheated though, last weekend I bought a 86 diesel Trooper that is in pretty rough shape. However it looks as if the engine is good and alot of great parts. So instead of sanding on the grille, I took the one from the diesel. With a bit of cleaning up and a couple coats of Fusion satin black here is the completed round headlight grille. Personally I dig it.......

Image

So then I decided it was time to upgrade the interior lights. I had ordered some LED panels for a engine bay light project and since I was going to use 2 for it and I had 3 from the 5 I ordered, I went to work.

First I needed a way to mount the LED panel, so I took some kydex plastic. Kydex is frequently used by knife makers to make knife sheaths and gun holsters. You apply heat, the plastic becomes pliable and mold-able. I cut the sheet into 1" strips.

Image

Then I applied heat and bent the kydex to shape to make a bridge over the light contacts inside the housing.

Image Sorry for the blurry photo.

Next I decided I wanted to install two panels in the housing up front and one in the housing over the cargo area. So I soldered the two wires together and installed the adapter for the bulb that was included with the LED panels. The panels have 3m sticky tape and I mocked up the two panels side by side.

Image

Next I went to the Trooper and plugged in the lights to verfiy they both worked and marked the locations for the screws. The housing have holes already there, so I used a couple self-tapping screws to install.

Image

You can see in the photo my holes were not very accurate but one the cover is on it looks like I knew what I was doing! LOL

Image

So now, I am waiting till dark to see the fruits of my labor.
