1984 Short Wheel Base 1st Gen Trooper

Postby ubs_lover » Mon Sep 21, 2009 11:02 am

Hi all,

I bought this short wheel base Trooper last February. It's a 1984 non-turbo C223 diesel.

Image

Like I said on my introduction post, the body is not in a good condition, but the frame is quite good. The engine is great, it never failed to start and sounds like new although it already has 340.000kms.

The previous owner has convert it to rectangular lamp grill and... Mercedes Benz emblem. :(

Image

I have a plan to re-paint it and make it as close as possible with 1982 JDM edition, just like this.

Image
Image

The color will be like this :

Image

some friends told me to make a soft-top version like that picture, but I think I'll pass that idea, maybe on another project.

here's my sketch for this project :

Image

beside of re-paint it, (at that time) my other plans are :

- convert all the Chevrolet emblems to Isuzu
- round headlight grill
- 2" bodylift
- 16"x5" steel wheel
- 7.50" military style tires

Regards,

Andy

Here's some items that I've been able to collect not long after I bought that Trooper:

-Round headlamp grill, various Isuzu's emblems, old Isuzu sign lamp.

Image
Image

I got those emblems mostly from US eBay.

-a set 16" steel wheels, powder coated with (very) light brown color

Image

-Isuzu Steering wheel
Image
the old steering wheel has Chevrolet badge on it, and it has different shape with the Isuzu one
Image

- another set 16" steel wheels, black color, include with Sumo ST888 7.50"x16" tires
Image
here's the Tyre pattern looks :

Sweet. I love seeing these vehicles from other countries, very subtle differences but all really great.

Thanks for the comment guys :D

Very sorry for my bad English

Continuing the story,

After drove it for 4 months, I realized that it needs a 5 speed transmission.
Lucky, a friend offering me 5 speed transmission (MSG5E) from his 4ZD1 gasoline Trooper.

Image

He changed the transmission with 5 speed unit (MSG5K) coming from C223 diesel, it has lower 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear so his Trooper will perform better while offroading.

I did that in one of Indonesian Troopers Club workshop, you'll be able to see a glimpse of another 1st gen Trooper on some pictures.

Just before the transmission swap begin, another friend offering me a wide rear axle from his '89 Trooper. Since it'll give me better stability and improve wheel travel, I didn't have to think twice to put that axle on my Trooper.

Here's the result :

New crossmember for the 5 speed unit
Image

Have to make new hole for the transfercase shifter
Image
Image

the wide axle :

Image
Image

here's the difference with the old axle (a picture from another '84 Trooper) :

Thanks man :)

I just want to make it different. Even in my country it's not a usual setup.

The N/A diesel engine didn't produce a lot of power, so keeping the weight as light as possible will help it's performance on and off-road.

That's why i choose that tractor-like wheels and tires.

But the whole idea comes when I saw a brochure of 1982 Trooper, some pictures shows Trooper with that skinny wheel setup.

Nice work :)

I don't know diesels ..... I thought the gas and diesel motors & transmissions had different bolt patterns. Swap bell housings?

Thanks Curt :)

Yes, gas 4ZD1 and diesel C223 had different bolt patterns. So I swapped the transmissions only, bell housing stayed with the old engine.

For this you have to drop the whole transmission, switch the bell housing and put it back.

Andy

Thanks Cronk, also like your RS, it inspire me a lot.

Someday I'll show my friend's Troopers. Many of them has done engine swap and SASed their IFS.

Back on my Trooper's story,

2 weeks after changing the tires I put that Trooper in a paint workshop. At that time I have to work in another city, so I ask my friend to watch the painting process. He's also a big fan of Trooper, so I believe that he can watch over Trooper's specific body detail.

Yes, I have to sand it to the bare metal, there are some rust spot that had to be fixed.

Another reason, although the previous owner has paint it a year ago but there is some body line that isn't correct, have to fix it also.

I'm using 7.50"x16" tires, the overall size is about 32"
Have to add some bodylift, the tires is too close with fender.

Image

I have to pay 600US$ for the paint job, that's include the paint material, sanding and welding.

Taking the body off the frame is not common in here, it'll cost me 2-3 times more. Restorating and painting frame like GreaseMongkey's and BtW's should be good, but since the frame only had small surface rust the frame will be painted with body on top of it.
