Straight 30-weight motor oil in temperate climates; in Idaho you'd probably benefit from a multi-vis such as 10W-30 in the winter. It'll shift a bit smoother.

If you're looking for something in a performance flavor, Redline makes good oils. Unless you have a dlr locally, you'll have to order it. Penzoil Synchromesh is usually available at Autozone and other parts stores and is a good alternative. The performance oils have "modifier" additives which enhance shifting action.

The Redline oil is synthetic and quite a bit more $$$ than the Penzoil product. If you're just looking for an oil change, standard motor oil will definitely do the job.

Don't forget to drain & refill your transfer case as well, it has separate drain/fill plugs. You could run either Dino oil or regular synthetic in the transfer case, the special oils with shift additives provide no benefit in there.

get under it and you'll see a fill plug on the side. Top it off while on a flat surface.
don't overtighten it back in there.

A word of caution: only Isuzu trannies use motor oil, the 2wd BW T-5 uses ATF. It's important to give relevant vehicle info when asking a question, I don't see here 2 or 4wd was specified. If you put it in your signature it's always there, no one has to ask.

Good point.
5 speed could be 2wd and not that rare for the older models

I used Mobil1 synthetic 5W-30 in my MUA-5 (91 Trooper). I'm not a believer in synthetic oil in motors, but for a trans where the oil will be in it for a very long time I thought it made sense. It shifts nicely, even smoothly enough to get me home with no clutch (the clutch hose burst) and limped it home in 4-LOW.
