Call me stupid but...

Postby TroopDawg » Mon Oct 26, 2020 11:23 am

I have the head completely off a 4ze1 engine. Oil pump is removed. Water pump is also removed!

Just bought the truck and the past owner said he put some sort of sealant in the coolant system in 2006 that was supposed to be delluted with water. He said the truck instantly over heated then felt like it was running on 3 pistons.

My guess. Warped head and a failed gasket.

When i removed the head... Holy hell! Every port was filled and clogged with a “metalic like jb weld sealant”.... i unclogged all the ports while using a vac to avoid dropping anything into the ports. I will be buying a new radiator and water pump... one question i have that might be a stupid one, is this...

While looking at the top of the block, what ports are water and what ports are for oil. I have a micro power washer that id like to chase out the water passeges with. I dont want to fill an oil port lol.

Well. I did it. I was able to look at the head and spot the oil ports. I took a pic and marked them for anyone here to see. All the other holes are for bolts and water.

If it clogged those ports, it also clogged the radiator. And the heater core. And who knows what else. Coolant also circulates through the head.

If I understand him correctly, he already managed to unclog the head. On the block, I would also go as far as removing the coolant pipe from the driver side, the pipe plugs from each side at the bottom, And to be sure, as long as it is this far opened up, pop the freeze plugs out of each side of the block. I hadnt thought of the freeze plugs! That would make for great access! Btw, i also used a nitrogen tank with a regulator set to 300 to blow loose whatever i could in the block! I did NOT pressurize the block to 300 of course. There is plenty of ventelation in the block to not be effected by a 300 psi blast of air! Broke up surface rust well between rinses

The block is in great shape. No rust in the oil ports and the cylinder walls are great. Drained the oil and that was looking great as well! I can fill up the cylinders with WD-40 and they will stay filled over night! So i know the rings are tight. I have the cab off right now so i plan on doing the fuel pump and a new clutch just because.

All the damage has happened within the water system!

So the head is being hot tanked, remachined and rebuilt. New radiator, water pump, heater core and hoses. Ive rebuilt a few duramax engines that were in worse shape. I have a feeling this is going to be a good running engine. Just had a shitty owner in its past.

It beats the 2.3 block that im replacing it with. That one had a hole the size of a basketball in the bottom of it.
