Intake manifold tightening sequence and torque

Postby dray2n » Sat Feb 05, 2011 12:16 am

Can someone explain to me the proper way to tighten the lower intake manifold? I also have the fel-pro gaskets. Which side goes up?

Thank You,

My FSM says 18 ft lbs torque on the intake , it did not show the sequence , but i am pretty sure you want to start in the middle and crisscross the tighting , first just snug them all down then , then torque them from the middle to ends crisscrossing them.

I don't know about the felpro gasket. If it were me and the gaskets had any ridges i would put them down toward the engine.

Yup, the revised specs are 13 ft lbs. The old ones were 17. They changed it because the older gaskets were prone to cracking.
The newer design is better, Fel-pro is an excellent replacement. I continue to use 13ft lbs. without any issues.

Which side goes up... IIRC, one side has grooves/recessed or something, and the other is flat? I installed mine with the flatter side down.

I just did a circle like the one the heads use, and I torqued to 18 lbs. I used Fel-pro.

The IMG's are in and all seems fine; time will tell. I bolted the manifold in a criss-cross sequence, starting in the center, and decided to go at 15ft.lbs. instead of the 13 or 18 with the fel-pro gaskets. I have one question. What rpm should it be idling at when in park or neutral? Thanks to all who have helped me here. I have posted on another Isuzu forum without one response. You guys are great!!

750 rpm when it's warmed up.

Thanks Med!c,
Mine is idling at 1000 in park but 750 while in gear. It was doing this before changing the img's also. I don't know why this is. Could the fact that someone removed both catalytic converters make it do this??? I don't have much experience at being a mechanic so I'm just looking for anything.
Thanks,
Drayton

Check the vacuum lines, they tend to rot out, especially the FPR hose and the one that goes to the back of the intake.
Itd be a good idea to clean your MAF sensor, air filter, change PCV valve, and clean the EGR valve and port while you were doing the intake service.

Mine idles at around 1-1,200k RPM, then drops down to around 750-800.

Dae,
Thanks for your reply. I actually have already replaced the fuel pump, EGR, IAC, MAF, PCV valve, and changed the spark plugs within the past two months. Also cleaned the throttle body real good. I'll give the vacuum lines another good look and the fuel pressure regulator.
Thanks,
Drayton
