Just checked out your latest pics on FB, looks sick. The progress you've made is awesome. What's the story with the bright red under side, not the primer but the BRIGHT red?
If your road trip takes you through Ontario give me a heads up, the wife and I are moving there in a few weeks. _________________ Chris

It's the same color I did the drive shaft, shackles, sway bars, calipers, sway bar links and soon to buy heavy duty torsion bars. It will match the frame stuff under the truck and allow me to pick out spots of rust or damage easily.
As for going into Canada, that's next years trip. Across Canada and into Alaska! This year is just a U.S. trip. _________________ BtW - 1991 LS Trooper In Progress, Complete Restoration with 3.4L Swap! (The Tank)

I hate posting the week after I do something because I forget everything that I accomplished; but I will try and fill you in the best I can.
Step 1, seam seal all openings that dirt and debris can enter and cause rust.
As you can see when I said all openings, I meant all openings.
Step 2, Undercoating
I was going to use herculiner originally to coat the underside but could not find any store that carried herculiner in the spray-able bottles for my schutz gun and wasn't sure how the gallon role on kit would spray, so went with plan B which I think was a better option in the end anyway. You know the rough coating under the paint on the rocker panels of German cars (VW in my case), called chip guard, went down to my body shop guys and picked up two bottles of the stuff to spray with my schutz gun. Can't believe how awesome it worked and looked. I sprayed it at 65 psi which gave it texture but not like 60 grit sandpaper texture as the herculiner is.
Pictures...
I'm going to do the front wheel wells with this as well once I reinstall them. It is supposed to reduce noise as well so we will see how it helps. I can honestly say the stuff really is chip resistant. Your local autoparts or body supply store only sells it in aresole cans though and I'm not too sure how that compares to this stuff.
Step 3, Top coat.
Wasn't 100% sure what color to make the underside. I had a couple choices to use that day, Gloss Sunrise Red, John Deere Yellow, Gloss Hunter Green, High Gloss Black (the same as the frame), and Regal Red. I was thinking yellow because I was still unsure what color I was painting the truck and was thinking yellow so going yellow would make sense in that aspect. Then I thought black but if I started to have rust and things occur black would make it hard to notice. Then Regal Red wouldn't match anything. Gloss Sunrise Red is the color of the sway bars, calipers, shackles, soon to be torsion bars, and drive shaft so it would match my frame colors. End pick, Gloss Sunrise Red. Pictures...
It looks better in person than in the pictures. I really like the way it turned out. As you can see in the first picture I painted the firewall black as well anticipating putting the body back on and not getting to the firewall later on.
Also you won't see the red unless you're under the truck because I am leaving the wheel wells black.
So know the body is ready to go back on the frame! As soon as I get the next pictures loaded I will post this weekends progress. Schools over this week too so I will have more time next week to work on it after work.
Enjoy the pictures!! _________________ BtW - 1991 LS Trooper In Progress, Complete Restoration with 3.4L Swap! (The Tank)

The rear DS section. If you look close to the back portion you can see how it is rotted out.
This whole section of the back PS was extremely week from the body mount back. Where the visible crack is I took my body hammer to it and it went right through. I was surprised the Shackle hadn't pushed through like most of them I see.
The rear bump stops were gone. The base was still bolted to the mount but the rubber was gone!
This is one of the four holes that were found on the passenger side.
The trans mounting bar mounts were pretty bad. |

| btw1549 wrote: | Well the next step after spraying the rust reformer inside of the frame and letting it dry for a week I was to go ahead and coat the inside with this stuff...
Rust-Oleum Industrial Gloss Black. This is what I'm doing the whole frame with. It's that "Rust Proof Guarantee" That I have used and seen work in the past that made me go with this. Plus, like I said before I plan on coating the inside of the frame once a year with this stuff and you can both buy this and spray this easily. Here's some pics of the finished project.
I used my same rust proofing gun but had to modify my holes with a little bone saw to give them more of a fan pattern because the paint was thick, even after thinning it. It worked well though and coated the inside sufficiently. Now the inside of the frame should be coated and protected very well! I'm hoping it holds up very well in my PA winters. I guess well have to wait and see. Definitely not this winter. Hopefully next winter though since my trip is planned for august!! Here's the link you can go to to see all the pictures of the frame up to this point. Now I just have to sand the outside from all the runs and stuff that got on it while doing the inside and put the final coats on it. Then it will be time to put things back together. |

I haven't updated because every night after work I have worked on the truck until going to bed to do it all over again the next day. It's coming along nicely. Here are shots from like two weekends ago of the work I did after dropping the motor back in the ranger.
Got the firewall painted with the color that the truck will be in. It called Ignition Orange Metallic. It's a GM color for the G8. not many in this color were sold and I'm not sure why because it is a sweet color.
It has a lot of gold metal flake in it!
Here are some shots of the body back on the frame. Had a few issues putting it back on like my fuel tank vent line just happened to be mounted in the exact, and I mean exact same spot as the body harness. Cargo box fits perfect and leaves plenty of room for a muffler. I used all stainless steel bolts for the body mounts. Got super surprised by how high the back end sits, this first pic will actually show stock and mine next to each other! Even all the cross bars for the rear floor where in the exact location they needed to be!
Then we seam sealed the rear inside so I could topcoat and get the carpet back in.
That's all I have uploaded for now. I'll tell you I have made a lot of progress though but haven't taken as many pictures as I normally have because it's been no stop. I'll update with the rest next chance I get. _________________ BtW - 1991 LS Trooper In Progress, Complete Restoration with 3.4L Swap! (The Tank)

Simply amazing Matt. Doing great brother. The seam sealing alone is incredible. And yeah, your right. That underbody coating they use on VW's is some serious s---. It seems to do an awesome job stopping rust and my Jetta was pretty damn quiet too. Is that stuff commercially available? I think these trucks are supposed to rake forward anyways. I cant remember what you have on your rear suspension. Did you add a leaf or are they just new springs? If it's that high with that HD steel floor and wheel wells you put in there, imagine what it would be like with the stock set up.
Oh yeah, loving the color too. Best thread ever. _________________ Matt

That coating unfortunatly is not avaiable to regular consumers but the body shops can get it. One of the reason I haven't listed the name of the stuff or the body shop that got it for me!
I do have OME spings in the rear but stock height shackles. And I was also amazed because the back definitely weights more not to mention the extra weight of the frame.
Sorry I haven't updated latelty either but I have been spensing everynight after work down the garage to finish her. A little side update it does run and has all it's components together. just need to bleed the brakes before driving and put a temporary exhaust on it to get it to my buddies place so I can use his mandrel bender. I am leaving the 15th of september for the trip so I have to start driving it this weekend. _________________ BtW - 1991 LS Trooper In Progress, Complete Restoration with 3.4L Swap! (The Tank)
