Here is my trail report.

I have to be in Harrisonburg, VA the evening of Dec 13th. So I am organizing a low key trip to GWNF. We plan to be on the trails from 10AM-3PM and camp out Saturday night. Cool.

I am thinking that this will just be a day trip. We can meet up around 9:30, be on the trails by 10-10:15 and plan to be off the trails by about 3-3:30.

However, I could be convinced to camp out and maybe even do a night run. There are many primitive camp sites (no water or potties) at GWNF. I just have to be in Harrisonburg for part of the evening.

Are you thinking Shoe trail or what? Where do we want to meet? I am thinking about Camping Sat night possibly...

Also we might bring another buddy with a Tacoma.

I was thinking farther North because I have to be in Harrisonburg for a few hours Sat evening. My plan was to meet up at the Shell station on Rt33 on the West side of Harrisonburg. Here are the detailed directions from I81 to the Shell Station:

  • Take I81 EXIT 247B E.MARKET ST/US-33 West toward HARRISONBURG (There are several Harrisonburg exits. Be use to take the correct one!)
  • In about 2 miles you will reach the city center and have to go counter clockwise around the square.
  • Turn RIGHT onto N MAIN ST/US-11 N/US-33 W.
  • Turn LEFT onto COURT SQ/US-33 W.
  • Turn LEFT to stay on COURT SQ/US-33 W.
  • Turn RIGHT onto W MARKET ST/US-33/VA-42.
  • Continue on W MARKET ST/US-33/VA-42 for about one mile. You will see a Shell Station on the right.

If you have a GPS or access to Mapquest: I believe the address of the Shell Station is 1010 W Market St Harrisonburg, VA 22801-9001

Plan to arrive around 9:30. We can work at the details then. If we are going to camp, I would suggest heading over to the camp sites and pitching the tents before we start wheeling. But remember, this is primitive camping with no water or potties.

Here is a map of the trails at that section of GWNF. Click on it for a larger/printable image. I have marked some of my favorite trails in yellow. They range from very easy to difficult trails that I would not suggest to someone without rock rails. One run is the loop to and down Flagpole Knob. The other is the loop up Second Mt and down Dictum Ridge. We usually camp in the Meadow.

Can I get my camper to the meadow without tearing it up?

We may have a new camper by then. One of the Off Road models by Starcraft. A 13RT. It is sweet.

Later,

YES, you should have absolutely no problem. Although you have to drive about 1 mile or so on dirt roads, most people run to the meadow in 2WD with their tires fully inflated. I have even seen an Accord get back there.

Here is a photo of the meadow, full of rigs. My red Trooper is under a tree in the middle of the shot.

Cool. We'll run the stocker friendly trails that the Midatlantic Toyota Crawlers usually run for their fall colors event. I had no trouble running these trails when the red Trooper was completely stock.

Everyone should bring some wood. The night is Dec is likely to be cold.

Pathfinder boy is out... Tacoma boy (Mike C.) is still a maybe.

Also one of my brothers buddies Rob is now a maybe in his Cherokee.

I have firewood cut and ready. I'll get Smitty to tow the utility trailer again so we can carry a good bit. Also I will bring a grill. Maybe we could do some burgers or pork chops Sat. night.

I can prep something if I could get some contributions to help cover the costs for dinner... The jambalia at Halowharrie really dented my vacation budget. All I need is a head count.

Uh yea. We had a group go down 2 years ago end of November. There was a fire ban we were not aware of. The Rangers made us aware. Not a fun night. Cold will sober you up quick.

I was there last Nov during the fire ban, for the MATC Fall Colors run. I brought a propane heater to stay warm and drank lots of jungle juice.

So how do we find out if there is a fire ban for this trip?

I have heat in the camper but sitting around a campfire just feels right ya know.

I'd suggest planning on teens to 20's Saturday night so think extra warm clothes.

I wasn't worried because last year there was a drought and there were all sorts of advisories against burning wood. I believe that the whole state of VA had a ban. In any case, we will be in the North River Ranger District of GWNF. The GWNF Advisory page states that there are no advisories at this time.

So someone will be nice and toasty through the night while the rest of us will be stuffed in our sleeping bags.

You too can be warm!!

Get yourself a tent heater from Zodi. They make propane heaters and hot water heaters for camping. Or you can get a lil' buddy catalitic heater. They work great at taking the edge off the cold in a tent.

I plan on putting some of those hand warmers in my sleeping bag. That should be fine.

I can't wait. So far it only looks like three definites. If the maybes all come we should have a nice group. Six rigs is a good size.

Do you think a fullsize Dodge ram could make the trails we plan on running? If so I have another maybe...

No problem. As I said, we will mostly be running wide fire roads. There may be a few obstacles that are tight but all of them have bypasses so he will be able to decide whether or not to try them.

Like I said, I am planning this as a stocker friendly, novice run. ANY 4WD will be fine, no lockers or lift needed. Street tires will be fine except maybe in some of the mudholes.

Well, add Andy & Laura in their Dodge Ram to the Attendees list!

Tacoma boy and Mr. Pathfinder have backed out for now. Robb in his Cherokee is still a maybe.

On another note, check out the Outdoor Life forum here if you get a chance. I posted a couple of pics of my new toy! Now if I can stop spending money on other stuff and put some towards upgrades for the Trooper!

Looks like we may have some more attendees. There was a small group on the FJCruiser forum (2 FJCs and 2 Heeps) that was also trying to get a trip going. So we are going to try to combine the two groups.

Sounds good! Are we still planning to meet at the Shell @0930 and head over to the camping area, then go wheel?

I was doing some PM on the Trooper and noticed how bad I trashed my trans skidplate at hallowharrie. I will have to get a new one b4 the spring run and maybe the crossmember as well.

I hope to get the lift on it in Jan or Feb. We will have to wait and see.

The thread on the FJ site discusses the crazies camping out in Dec. I called them wimps Laughing

The plan is for us to still meet at the Shell station around 9:30 and then to set up camp. The wimps, I mean the non-campers, will probably just meet us in the meadow around 10:15. We should all be on the trails by 10:30.

I can't believe that you damaged the skid plates unless Isuzu really lightened them since the first gens. I have hit numerous times on mine and all that I have ever done to repair them is to spray some paint on the scratches. The ones on the first gens are solid.

Regardless, lift is a good idea; so is getting a set of rock sliders to protect your rocker panels. Give Matt at Indy4x a call, he can fix you up and his shop is just about 20 miles north of Richmond off of I95.

Yeah I know Matt. I actually work around the corner from his shop. I have been in there many a time.

He and I have discussed the game plan for my Trooper from day one.
1. Lift and shocks
2. Body lift and sliders
3. Winch bumper and on and on.....

I plan on running 265's around town and while towing then switching to 33's on the trail.

Back to camping, if this weekends weather repeats next weekend we could really be in for some fun! It is snowing here and I here there is about 2" of snow and climbing in Harrisonburg. That could make a simple trail a little more interesting.

Sounds good to me!! By the way I picked up my camper this morning.

We are camping in comfort next weekend!!

Snow is fun. It is the icy rocks that present the most trouble especially for those with A/Ts. I have done some winter wheeling on normally green trails and seen rigs get sideways trying to slow down on icy downhill sections.

The wife and daughter are coming also. Andy and his wife are probably just coming up for the day but if they decide to stay, they will be staying with us.

Smitty is bringing a buddy with him. They are tenting camping and then going to Massanutin to ski on Sunday.

Saturday Night, Dec 13
Low: 22 °F RealFeel®: 20 °F
Party cloudy

Looks cool. I might join, not too sure.. I dont have a spare tire and I cant get one right away and going 150 miles away from home with no spare is risky business. Specially how one of the tires is repaired.. I'll look around to see if I can find a used one for 20 bucks. Even if I do come I wont camp over night. I'll let you guys know what happens. If I cant come, well I already have a trip planned with a friend for Green Ridge State Park for spring, perhaps with enough interest we could make that an isuzu event.
