My transfer case has always been noisy but I figured that was normal. Well I had my console and shifter plate removed and noticed more than one noise and not consitant. A chirp, rattling noise usually when no forward or reverse load. It sounds like a loose bearing.
When in 2wd its nice and quiet. It happens in 4wd and also in 2wd before the hubs unlock. I haven't tried 4 low yet.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know how to disable the auto hubs while in 4wd? I want to rule out the hubs.

Is this transfer case specific to the isuzu or is it popularly used? If so I'd like to know the make and model so I can download a manual.

Take what off? The hubs? I hope thats the problem but the noise is definately right around the transfer case. It might be the front drive shaft but I doubt it. You guys have to understand I just had to replace the clutch so I'm not looking to pull it back apart unless I have a good idea what it is. If I had a good manual I could logically narrow tings down and make an educated guess.

Start with checking the u-joints. At least they are easy to check.

Hopefully its not the needle bearing inside the t-case like in THIS POST. Its not common but more then one has failed.

Oddly enough my exhaust makes that same noise with no load i forward or reverse. I figured this out by getting under, listening, kicking the holy hell out of it. <--- That stopped it. I dont know about the hubs rpoblem, but you might just try your exhaust... It is simple, and easy to fix. (dont skin your shin.

When I had it out I messed around with it and it felt pretty tight. Maybe a slight bit of play. The noise sounds like loose gears and/or bearings. I really hope you're right though. I might remove the driveshat to see if that fixes the problem. While it's out i'd probably replace the u joints regardless. I'm sure they're cheap. Are they the clip or press type?

I don't think it's the exhaust. It only happens when in 4wd or and the time between shifting to 2wd and the hubs releasing.

I think what Joes means, is swap out the auto locking hubs for manual hubs.

You guessed it. The noise and vibration finally got so bad I had to stop using four wheel drive all together and muster the nuts to crawl under in negative temps. After removing the skid plates and checking the joints... thunk thunk! All the needles bearings are gone! No wonder it sounded like the transfer case it was the joint on the transfer case. The funny thing is I shook all the joints down while the tranny was out and they were tight. The only thing I can think of is when I pressure washed the tranny I may have got some water in the bearings and this joint was the only one without a grease fitting.

Needless to say I am very happy it was what it was. When I found the completely toasted joint it was an instant ear to ear grin!

I replaced the front drive shaft u-joints. All noise and vibration is gone. Even at 70mph+ it's quiet and smooth. I was told a nosiy transfer case is normal and to ignore it. After replacing the offending joint mine is very quiet. If yours is noisy I suggest shaking down the u-joints.

the t-case makes noise? since when?
Just kidding, I agree it's odd to hear the first few times, I just turn the radio up a bit to drown out the sound of the t-case moving, most of the time I welcome the t-case whine it reminds me it's working correct without all that Push button 4wd crap, much rather a manual T-case Laughing Glad you got the issue fixed, had the same one cost 40bucks to fix now i just need new front axles haha
