|
|
I had some time and I uploaded this pics, they look way better than the little cell phone ones. I cant wait to get the black rims on with some 33's and lift it, Im still saving $$.
This is before i painted the trim and bumpers.
I hated that color.
After
As you can see, i sanded the clear coat off, so the paint would stick, then i masked everything around so i wouldnt get over spray on the blue parts.
I didnt take off the bumper, just the grill. I sanded the chrome parts on it and painted it black too ( I dont like chrome).
I had a couple runs near the brush guards, but I let it dry, sanded it and painted it again.
Finished. Looks nice, doesnt it? The paint matches the brush guard.
I also took out the spare tire cover i didnt feel like painting it, i just put a lock on the tire. Ill get one of those black plastic covers later.
This is what i used. You can find it at Kragen. I used around 4 cans I had to spray like 3 coats on all the beige parts to cover them.($6.00 each).
Hope you liked it. It took me forever to upload these pics (I have dial up).
Please leave a comment.
Thanks. _________________ IT TAKES 4

gosh that looks so nice. it actually looks like aftermarket trim that you can buy. thank you very much for the new more detailed pic's, i'm very gracious that you had the patience to upload the images with your dial-up connection. your hard work is showcased a lot better with these images . now i can get a better idea of what mine would look like with newly painted trim. i might actually even try seeing what no trim would look like. i have a feelin' that your rig is going to be pretty exsquisite once you put some larger tires on and a lift, i've got 33's on mine and love them. oh yeah, how long did it take you to do this? was it all done within a day?
thanks again for the hard work, _________________ ToPhEr

Hey Christopher if you do get rid of the trim, I'd buy the lower peices. |

Tofer "oh yeah, how long did it take you to do this? was it all done within a day? "
Well. it took me a whole day. The hardest part was sanding and masking. specially inside the doors. I had to run to the Kragen again when i ran out of paint, and the couple of runs i had, i had to wait till the next day to sand them, and paint them again, but wasnt that hard, but i think it looks so much better. _________________ IT TAKES 4 |

the one's running underneath the door? now remember chris, this is just a thought that i was having, and am not actually taking them off yet. i'm just filled with the idea of what it would look like w/out the trim on. but if something does come about and i don't keep my lower trim pieces on, then yes, maybe we can work something out .

Cool...I've thought about doing that on my Trooper to match the Calmini rear bumper. Have to wait until spring though... _________________ 93 Trooper RS

That's the way they should have rolled out of the factory looking like. I like that alot. Throw some lift on there and some black rockcrawlers and that would be sweet.

Thanks for all the comments.
I think all of you guys trucks that have brush guards or steel bumpers would look better if they didnt have that beige color. I dont know why they didnt just leave the plastic unpained from the factory, or just paint the whole truck the same color. Thats what i wanted to do, paint everything blue, but that was gonna be a lot of $$.
I only spent like $28.00. _________________ IT TAKES 4 |

alright, so i was inspired by your post . i sanded down my beige trim last night and luckely got out of my classes early today and masked the body panels off and began painting. i ended up with the same paint as you did (works great). it did take me about 5-6 hours, only because i had to make two different trips to get more paint and 30+- minutes to eat dinner. there were spots were my sander dug in too deep and i had to go back and smooth out with 220 grit paper. the less harsh you are on the plastic at the initial sanding, the less you have to go back and do later. after about 2.5 coats, i had to sand out some rough spots and then went ahead and lightly sanded all the rest of the trim to even out the final coats. i went through 5.5 cans of paint (went ahead and layered it up pretty good). even cleaned my tires up pretty good with some shine foam, so that i would have some more black to compliment the new trim . next on the list is most likely some black 15x8 rockcrawler rims when the tires i'm currently running have to get replaced .
again, thank you 98trooper for the inspiration.

this has me wanting to try this out on my Amigo's hard top, front and rear bumpers. The florida heat has faded them badly, and this would look very good, especially on silver.

Hey. Tofer . i didnt really think that anyone else would do this so fast, but im glad u did and it turned out great. Now you dont have to worry if you hit something and get a scratch on your bumper. if u do, just spray a coat or two of the spray paint and let it dry.
Hey, what about the grille, are u gonna take that chrome out?
I like ur tires and the lift. And i agree, all u need now is some black shiny rims and you are set. You ll probably get ur rims b 4 me and i would like to see the finished product. Then ill now what my trooper is gonna look like when im done with it.
Next low budget upgrade ill do will be smoking out the headlights and taillights (only the orange and white parts). When i paint the hd lghts and tl lghts, the color will be similar to a medium dark black tint on a car window. I wanna have my truck all blue and black. Ill post some pics whenever i get it done.
Im still trying to save up some $$ for my lift, 16x10 rims and some 33s.
Thanks everyone for ur comments and id like to see more trooper owners get rid of their beige trim. Keep posting. _________________ IT TAKES 4 |

actually, you might be getting the new wheels before me , the tires that i'm running are only two months old. if i knew that i was going to stick with the same 16" wheels than i would probably go ahead and do it, but i think that i might go for 15x8's if they can clear the brake's. plus, i have a buddy that has a set of black 15x10's and new bfg a/t's, and another with 16x10's? on maxxis buckshot m/t's (both sets are 35's) that i am going to test fit to see if i can clear 35's. i'm most likely going to be installing a 1" BL this weekend once it gets here. regardless, i will take some pic's of what the black rims and various wheelsets look like installed. who knows, you might beat me to the punch .
as far as the grill goes, one of my friends pointed that idea out also. i knew that you had done that to yours, because you didn't want any chrome on your troop, but i'm not sure if i am going that far. another idea that he had was to get some roll on bedliner and paint the whole bottom half of the door panels (about where the first bend/crease starts) so that most trees/bushes that are low will not scratch up the blue paint. i might consider that one. i think what i will do is to get a side profile shot of my troop and play around in photoshop with it to see what the black lower door halfs might look like .
thanks again and later, _________________ ToPhEr

Man y'all them troopers look nice. Mine don't have all that fancy trim like yours. But y buddie as recommened to em that i paint my bumpers black, and every thing under that crease black. I think this would look good with my red paint. but i can't get photoshop to work with me right now. So do you people think this would look good? _________________

I like that idea. You are not gonna believe this but i was gonna spray the bumpers and trim with the bed liner stuff, but i didnt know how it would turn out and if i would like the texture on the bumpers, but i think it would look nice in the half of the doors down. _________________ IT TAKES 4 |

hey 98trooper, did you have to do any special prep work before you painted the grille? did you use the same paint? just curious because at the moment i'm starting to ponder the idea more and more.
now i just need to update my picture that is posted under my name .
