I had a pretty productive (actually destructive ) weekend, so I figured I'd get a thread started. I managed to remove all of the bolt-on front suspension this afternoon.
I've gotten pretty good at taking it apart
I've got just about all the parts, just have to put them together Here's the plan:
Axles are rebuilt and ready to go
-Chevy kingpin D60 front w/ 5.13's
-14BFF w/ disk brakes, probably welded
-Front SOA with shackles forward, BDS YJ front springs
-Rear SOA with stock springs
-Hi-steer of some sort once I see what the clearances look like
-I picked up a set of used 38.5x11 Boggers with plenty of tread left
The beginning of my front cross member
2x4x3/16 tube, cut to match the contour of the frame
2x2x3/16 tube in the center. It will be plated on the sides to the factory bumper mounts, and have two or three supports across the middle. I've got all the pieces cut for the supports, ready to tack on, and I ran out of gas for the welder . I hope to have the springs hung next weekend. I really want to get it rolling, and take it to a friends who has a plasma to take all those brackets off. That looks like a lot of work.
I'm shooting to have it trail worthy for April. I'll keep this thread updated with the progress.

Great start sounds like you have got it under control. I always like watching a complete build up like this. Keep us posted with lots of pictures.

Nice work, can't wait to see it finished. About the only thing Isuzu left on it is the engine now _________________ 93 Rodeo 3.2 auto 4x4 205,000 miles

Andre, great start!
Are those 5.13's going to be enough gearing to spin those 38's? I thought you'd go with something just a little taller??? Just curious.
Looks like lots of fun. _________________

He's just skipping the D44 part where most people start with 35s' and D44's and end up wanting more. I like his decision to go big the first time.
I'd say 5.13's and the low gearing he's got in his t-case (4:1), he'll be just fine.
I'm running 34's and 4.77's. And I'm still driving mine on the street. His is now pretty much a trail pig.
Nice work, keep the pictures coming.

The rear is getting a 14-bolt full-floater with a disk brake conversion.
I decided I wanted to go with full width axles for stability, and was originally planning on a D44 up front. I wanted to run atleast 37's which would mean upgrading the shafts and u-joints in a D44, and still being close to the reliable limit of that axle. For probably less than it would have cost me to re-build, re-gear, and upgrade a set of 3/4-ton axles, I found these, already geared. And they were even somewhat local. I had to replace a few bearings and seals in the front axle, but other than that, they were all ready.
I wasn't necessarily looking for boggers either . I just didn't want to pay for brand new tires and rims. I found a set of 4-38.5x11x16's on black rockcrawler rims for a decent price locally. I'll probably end up cutting them eventually, but I think they will work out well.
I just don't like breaking things, and I didn't want to be wanting to upgrade shortly after finishing, so I'm going big right out of the box

Hey, I resemble that remark
You think Stephanie won't be coveting this for her daily driver. Hmmm.... maybe I could slap some of her business stickers on it and make it a company vehicle _________________ 1994 Trooper - Delightfully close to stock |

Along the lines of what Joe said, this should be fine for trail purposes. 5.13's are also about as low as you can go in a 14-bolt axle. They just did a first run of 5.38's for the 14-bolt, but they are brand new, and there are some production issues. _________________ 1994 Trooper - Delightfully close to stock |

Good weekend so far. Got the front cross member finished up
I just had to try one on for size
I'm going to love this
I pulled the T-case, and I'm going to swap the front output to the stock yoke, and get it ready to re-install. I just need to pull the cross member for final welding, and I'm waiting on new spring hangers.
Hopefully more tomorrow

I used a similar set up when I junked the stock 4x4 running gear in my 1970 International Harvester Travellall. I foung the GM running gear in a rusted out mid 80's Suburban. I used the Dana 44's in the front with the corporate 14 floater in the rear. When I did mine I also used the stock GM stearing gear to eliminate the bump steer. The rear also had to have the spring perches moved to work with the difference in frame widths. I use this beast to pull a 6 horse trailer, and have never found it to be lacking.
Your width of the axles will be a problem unless you work with the back spacing of your rims. Those 60 front ends unless they are open knuckle do not turn well.

You could always ask Doug to bring his groover, and then we could all take turns cutting your tread blocks while sitting around the campfire......
Hmmmm - on second thought...
Cheers!

Thanks for the compliments!

It might be less than ideal steering, but I think the stability will more than make up for it. The wheels are 16x8's w/ 4.25" BS, with only 11" wide tires, so they shouldn't stick out too far.

I thought about that, but I don't know if the tires will be sitting still long enough
Couldn't hurt to bring it. We might get antsy

If we don't groove Andre's, I'll throw mine onto the "chopping block" for campfire mods in Uwharrie - he has the siping blade as well as the grooving blade, right?
