1995 trooper 4l30e DTC37

Postby bpgtrooper » Tue Sep 27, 2011 8:02 pm

The vehicle comes up with a dtc37 after cranking and before taking out of park. Tried neutral and got same results. I even tried just turning
ignition switch to run without cranking and after a few seconds the check transmission light would start flashing. Have had TCM and ECM replaced
and still have same problem. Also, had transmission rebuilt. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are there any symptoms other than DTC37 and Check Trans flash?

If you are stuck in 4th gear, it indicates the PCM probably does not have electrical control of the shift solenoids. To test this theory, engage Winter Mode when in D range and see if you start off in 3rd gear (Winter) or in 4th gear(Limp). If 3rd gear does not work, check to ensure the alternator output voltage is not greater than 15 VDC. If it gets too high the TCM can quit working properly.

Thanks Buster28,
I am a little puzzled now. I went back and retrieved the dtc code again and got dtc26(high voltage). At the battery I get 14.38 volts. Any idea why
I would get this code without the engine running by turning on the ignition to run? Thanks

The DTC was stored, no telling when it was generated. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes to clear any stored codes and see if any new codes are set after the engine has been started. 14.38 VDC alternator output at idle is pretty good, the regulator is typically set for 14.4 VDC max, but it could spike higher for a short duration. Where did you get the info that indicated DTC 26 was "high voltage" ?

Buster28, I found the info in a workshop manual for the 1995 trooper. It says input voltage too high. I just checked battery voltage at 12.4 then cranked and no code thrown. I am beginning to think it may be a problem wire somewhere that I bump and correct the problem every now and then thru vibration returns to its shorted or disconnected state. If true, I could be looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks

Are you still in Limp mode and did you try Winter Mode?

Buster, I tried again today. Before I got out my drive way the check trans light was flashing again. dtc 26 It went back into limp mode. Also, I tried the winter and power switch. The winter switch does not bring the dash light on. The power switch does. I have been fighting these problems ever since I bought this trooper(about 3 years) and have driven it for maybe 3 months without the check trans light on. It has mostly sat in the yard. Thanks for any help you can give. This is my 3rd trooper, but 1st with automatic trans.

When you say it went back into limp mode does that mean it was actually in 1st gear when you started off?

The fact that it started off in 1st gear is a very important piece of information. Was the gear selector is D or L when you started of in 1st gear?

If it was in D it indicates the TCM is controlling at least one of the shift solenoids. The transmission uses two shift solenoids to select the forward gears. The 1-2/3-4 (Shift A) solenoid is de-energized in 1st gear and the 2-3 (Shift B) solenoid is energized. To shift into 2nd gear, Shift A is energized, to shift into 3rd Shift B is de-energized. In 4th they are both de-energized.

Buster28, today I got back to my Trooper. I was still getting dtc26. I had another tcm so I swapped them out and started it up. I got a different code this time, it was dtc82. Mode switch problems. I climbed underneath and found the wiring harness against the exhaust pipe. After separating and taping the wires I tried again and got no codes. It looks like the shop that rebuilt the trans. didn't secured the wires as they should have done. I, for now am back in the Trooper. Thanks for helping me in solving my problem.
