Black beans/Packmula

Postby squatch » Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:55 am

The tale can now be told. I have a new old Zoo in my drive to keep Red Beans company. Saturday Hack was gracious enough to help me retrieve my new jewel.
Squatch and Hacks excellent adventure. Mario was in my drive at 6:30 Saturday morning. We quickly loaded some tools and headed to the local rental place to rent a car dolly. From there we were off to central Va. 2 weeks earlier I had put a deposit on a Spacecab pick up. Now we were going to bring it home. The truck had cut off on the previous owner so we took the dolly just in case. Of course the truck drove home like a charm. No dolly needed. We got back just in time to turn in the dolly before the place closed. Thanks for all the help Mario!

So here she is:
'88 Black Spacecab
4x4
2.6 4 cyl
5 speed
4:30 gears
235x15 tires
Tilt wheel
Sunroof
Manual windows and locks
We also picked up a cap while we were there. It came of a different pick up but fits well enough for now. and it already has roof racks for the canoes.

The frame is in great shape for an '88.

Mileage is pretty much an unknown. The speedo cluster was changed out before the previous owner bought the truck. They were told well under 100k by original owner. They have put 60k miles on the truck since '94 when they bought it. So we estimate 150k miles. The people I bought the truck from are just great. I really enjoyed spending time with them. Thank you Anne and Steve!

I have some more pics and there will be more to come. But probably not for a couple of weeks. There are a couple of projects ahead of this one. My plans are to make this my daily driver. just go through it and super tune, check brakes, change fluids, clean it up and drive it for now.

Thanks, with the tire size that's on it it drives just fine and appears to get pretty good mileage as well. Rolls easy at 70+mph. Short term no major plans other than just getting her running tip top and driving it.

Thanks folks, I'm still just standing there looking at it in the drive in disbelief. It's been a long time coming. A bit longer still before I do much with it. I did use it already though. I needed a couple of concrete blocks in the garage from out behind the woodpile. So I drove the Spacecab down and got them. it's going to be handy having a pick up again.

Image

Image

I also picked up this cap from the previous owners. It is for a Nissan Hardbody I think. It mostly fits!
Image

Just in case you didn't know. A Spacecab bed is 1" shorter than a standard short bed mini truck. I'll fix that.
Image

It appears that if I raise the cap 3" it will meet the body lines of this truck pretty well. also give me 3" more headroom in the back.
Image

Came with a nice set of Yakima racks and fake rain gutter mounts already on it.
Image

Image

The bed liner will be coming out and replaced with a Herculiner job. I already took the bedliner cover off the tailgate.
Image

Image

I've got plenty to do on this truck soon. Mostly just clean up and little stuff. Giving the truck a once over. It's a little idle challenged at the moment. Idles rough cold and a bit high (1,200rpm) warm. Fortunately the previous owners Stayed on top of the truck for the most part. It has had a timing belt and water pump in the last 1,000 miles along with a few other things! These pics will be a nice reference for before and after. 1st order of bussiness will be getting the leaks stopped. I hope to get the windshield reset in the next couple of weeks. Then I'm going to order new weatherstrip for the quarter windows and sunroof. That and check the drains on the sunroof. That should fix the leaks up for a while. The door and window rubber is in good shape. But 1st I have to get Red Beans ready for a Thanksgiving road trip!

Re: Black beans/Packmula

Postby squatch » Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:52 pm

I got a little time to mess with the truck today. Had a friend help lift the cap off. Before I did I placed a 4x4 under the front of it. A little too high but the cap lines up nicely when it's raised up. Real close to same body line.
Anyway I pulled the old factory bedliner out and found a lot of straw underneath. After hosing the bed out I found it to be in real good shape. There is a little rust from bedliner scuffing but nothing that can't be sanded and painted over. I intend to use a roll on bedliner. But in the mean time I intend to move some firewood with it!
Truck drew 1st blood today. Mashed and cut my hand against the back of the bed/tailgate edge getting the cap off. I guess that means we are bonding! :)

The bed is wet from being hosed out in these pics. Makes them look a little strange in places.

Wow, nice find, it looks alot like mine except for the color. Interior is the same. How did you figure out the gear ratio? Mine is an 89 but the rest looks the same. I even have the bed liner and a cap. I put an AMC head on with a Delta 260 cam to get it running, and run it does! Last fillup I figured the MPG at 19.3. The oversized exhaust I put on really helped bring it all together. I will be watching this. I found a set of snowflakes for mine just this last week in the recycling center I work at. They were on a Nisson pickup that came in. Congrats on the Pup!

I talked to folks who know more about these trucks than me! Seems in the Pick ups. If a 4x4 and 225x15 it has 4.30:1 gears if it has snowflakes and 31x10.50x15 then it should come with 4.56:1 gears. This is a small tire truck. It feels like it has tall gears driving it. I'm really trying to resist the temptation of bigger tires engine mods ect. I already have a nice set of 4:56 3rd members in the basement with only 86k on them. They came out of Red Beans when I added the 4:77s. But for now I'm really trying to stick with the 235 tires that are on it and focus on fuel economy. I also have another set of nearly new 235 Bridgestone AT's under the porch. That helps for now with the focus on economy. 2 sets of good tires in the smaller size already paid for! This is supposed to be my daily driver/commuter car so mileage is important. I'm giving up a 40mpg Civic for this truck. My wallet will feel the difference!

I will have to look closer at mine, right now it has a set of 235 on it and steel wheels with some chome trim. I will look at the door and see what it was supposed to have from the factory, I hope it has the 4:56 as I am working on a deal for a 3rd member already set up with an LSD

You can always put it in neutral and jack up one rear wheel. Make a mark on the driveshaft. turn the wheel one rotation and count how many times the driveshaft turns. 4 and 1/3 is 4.30:1. 4 and 1/2+ is 4.56:1. Worse case is just grab a 4:56 front from a 1st gen Trooper if you need to. Trooper had 4.56 with 235 tires. I might end up doing that for towing the boat before all is said and done. Nice thing about old trucks is cheap parts options. Build it the way you want.

I may have to do as you suggested, just to satisfy my mind. I think this little truck is the best Isuzu I have bought to date. I bought it for about 350 from another member, tbecktold and put the previously mentioned parts I bought from another member in Reno and that was about it not including my labor. So I am under $1000 to date. I have to fix some rust spots in the body next year but for now I am just going to use it as my DD. My truck has about 172 on the clock right now.

How'd you stumble upon this? Just kind of curious if it was word of mouth, Craigslist, etc. Good find, hope Red Beans doesn't get jealous of his new stable mate.

Thanks, It was a CL add without pics or tn. Kinda funny in that I had been talking to a guy here in MD that had one for sale. I got a chance to look at it but it needed too much work. I didn't want another rebuild project. They are all projects but I wanted something that could be driven. Got home and found this add and responded. Previous owner lives out in the sticks in Va. Nice folks. I think they were happy to have an Isuzu nut as they put it buying their old truck. They've had it a long time and were kind of attached to it. I have a couple of nice pics of them with the truck before we left. They took the shot of me in the cab getting ready to drive off.

I think Red Beans will be Ok. They serve different functions. At least that's the plan. Red beans is not registered for daily use. She has historic tags. I didn't want to go through changing all that and I needed a daily driver. Civic is flat worn out and won't pass emissions testing because it burns so much oil. So the timing was good. Black Beans will handle daily driving and hauling chores. Red Beans will tow the boat and is my expedition, and wheeling truck. As similar as they are having the same drivetrain ect they are still very different trucks. Much different feel driving them. Now that I have my desired Zoo's all I have to do is make them last forever and still use them as they were intended!

LOL I like Red Beans and rice and also Black Beans and rice. Maybe I need a rice trailer! Besides these are Jap trucks. They all come with rice built in.

2 colors of cars I have owned and don't want again. Black and white. Both look great when polished up but so hard to keep looking decent.
My wife had a white '86 Honda CRX SI she bought new. She works near the airport. I could buff and wax it over the weekend and it would look like crap by the end of the week if it rained. Jet exhaust washed all over it. Would stain the paint grey. I had compounded that car so many times there was primer stating to show on the edges of fenders and such when she sold it.

My 2000 trooper was black with the silver bottom parts. In 4 years I never drove that truck looking sweet. Every time I cleaned it up it rained within 24 hrs. I actually broke the drought one year by washing it. No rain in 4 months, no rain in the forecast. I washed it and it poured all night. I always thought it was dumb to paint the light color on the bottom next to the tires and road. The paint was pretty soft on that truck. every bug that hit the hood became a permanent part of the truck.

This truck is black and the paint has seen better days. I would like to paint it Olive Drab or something but the chrome is all in good shape and it would be sweet looking with a nice REAL paint job so who knows. Paint is down the road for now.
These links have write-ups and pics of most anything you ever will do on a 2.6 Isuzu. Engine, brakes, suspension, interior, you name it! Enjoy!
